Flowers8A few weekends ago, I visited the San Francisco Flower Mart for the first time. Although I had never been to the SF Flower Mart, during college when I was the social chair of my sorority, I visited the amazing LA Flower Mart to pick up flowers to turn into centerpieces for one of our events. I enjoyed myself thoroughly – there is something so intoxicating about walking through an entire warehouse full of flowers – the smells, the colors, the textures – it is truly a sensory overload in the best way possible. The SF Flower Mart is quite a bit smaller {at least on weekends} but no less wonderful. I took home armfuls of kumquat branches, lisianthus, white freesia, and a few other gorgeous bits I still do not know the names of, spread them out all over my dining room table, poured myself a glass of wine, and spent the afternoon arranging. It was so fun and highly satisfying to see the arrangements come together in a completely organic, unhurried way. I mentioned on this blog before that I was planning to do our wedding flowers myself for the wedding. Unfortunately, I changed my mind on this given certain timing constraints, but I am beginning to reconsider, given how much fun I had.  Anyone in need of a florist?

  1. This arrangement is stunning. I have always been one to adore the addition of little edibles in floral arrangements. Beautiful work.

  2. Gorgeous arrangement!! Are those kumquats.

Thank you Suzanne! Yes they are. They were in a little bucket right by the cash register at one of these stalls, and I just had to pick them up. Aren’t kumquats the cutest? 🙂

This is so gorgeous Lindsay. Love the soft, flowing and organic nature of the arrangement. You’re a natural! I did the flowers for our wedding 2 years ago. The results were beautiful but I was definitely stressed on the morning of the wedding… I was trying to do the flowers last minute to prevent wilting (we got married in the Australian spring but it was ridiculously hot) but ended up just getting stressed! I think it’s probably better that you’ve got a florist. Play with flowers when you have lots of time and no pressing engagements (like getting married! Aah!). Hope that all of the planning is going well, beautiful! Mustn’t be long to go now? xoxo

Thank you so much love! I am so impressed that you had the courage to do your own arrangements – I am sure that they turned out beautifully! Was it fun or ultimately too stressful? I think that if I got married in town, I would take it on, but there will just be too much going on, being in a foreign country, the timing, etc. that it just doesn’t seem worth it. T minus 90 days! Eeek! Getting very excited though. Hope you are doing well lovely! xoxo

I’m definitely glad that I did it. I’m proud of how things turned out in the flurry of anxiety! I was still finishing my bridal bouquet whilst I was getting called in to get my hair done! I had a massive panic and sent one of my bridesmaids instead… but things turned out well in the end (you can see the bouquet and Aaron’s pin in the end photo on this post http://laurasmess.me/2013/11/06/aaron-appreciation-post/ ). Aaron loved his buttonhole pin, he’s kept it somewhere (things tend to get lost in our house so I have no idea where!). My mother in law has also dried my bouquet at her house. I definitely agree with you that it might be a bit stressful in a foreign country. I think the more that you can do to minimize stress and enjoy the day, the better! Ah, 90 days!!!! So exciting!!! xxxx

  4. This looks so lovely and beautiful. I really enjoy organic pieces, and fruit and herbs in floral arrangements (a la my favorite NYC florist Flower Girl!)

  5. So beautiful! These are just what I needed to look at as New York begins another polar vortex-induced cold spell. Thank you!

Thank you so much! And thanks for stopping by! I hope you are holding up okay, despite the uncooperative weather. Hopefully you East Coasters get a break from all of this very soon, and spring will arrive! xoxo
