cocktail friday: norman conquest

Norman5

I have been looking for a classic cocktail, fit for the holiday season.  I am slowly getting more into the brown liquors, having been too loyal to my clear liquors {vodka and gin} far too long, and have been experimenting more with bourbon.  This cocktail combines Calvados {a liquor made from apples in Normandy, France}, with good ol’ American bourbon.  It is mixed with a bit of apple cider for color and flavor, and finished with a splash of thyme-infused simple syrup.  This drink made me love bourbon {and Calvados} – for me, this was the perfect gateway bourbon drink.

Happy Friday!  Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Recipe continued after the jump…

Recipes

Norman Conquest Cocktail

  • 2 oz. bourbon {I used Bulleit}
  • 1 oz. Calvados
  • 2 oz. apple cider {or good quality apple juice}
  • 1/2 oz. thyme simple syrup {recipe follows}
  • Thyme sprigs {for garnish}

Mix all of the above ingredients together and serve over ice.  Garnish with a thyme sprig.

Thyme Simple Syrup

  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 5 thyme sprigs

Mix water and sugar in a small saucepan.  Cook over medium low heat until sugar completely dissolves.  Add thyme, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes.  Let cool completely and then remove thyme sprigs.
